Management of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network® (NCCN®) Oncology Research Program Using a New Web-based Software Platform MostSusan WalkerKelli 2018 Objective The National Comprehensive Cancer Network® (NCCN®) Oncology Research Program (ORP) supports research through collaborations with pharmaceutical companies and by drawing on the expertise of investigators from leading cancer centers. To help manage the research projects, NCCN launched a new web-based system. User feedback and production support requirements are monitored from launch. Challenge NCCN sought a simple and intuitive system for use by their investigators/ applicants, pharmaceutical industry grant providers, and internal staff. A prior solution had become unwieldy through customization, an increased maintenance burden, and lack of supplier support. Solution Following a selection process, NCCN chose a new web-based platform, which consisted of a purpose-built module to meet their needs. While this industry standard configuration is usually used by pharmaceutical companies to manage externally sponsored research, through light configuration it was able to support the NCCN ORP process. Outcome NCCN launched the new system and migrated active studies into the system. NCCN will use the web-based system to process approximately 50 proposed submissions and manage 70 active studies annually, and communicate with pharmaceutical companies who provided the research grants. Benefits NCCN anticipates that this new web-based system will enable the management of their studies in an efficient manner with the ability to upgrade and make changes to the system annually. The system will facilitate a consistent experience for grant applicants, NCCN staff, and peer reviewers, providing a more effective process, and ultimately contributing to better patient care.
